Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down I-880 in Oakland

A tragic multi-vehicle collision early this morning has resulted in a fatality and significant traffic disruptions on Interstate 880 near 16th Avenue in Oakland. The incident occurred at approximately 5:35 AM on September 1, 2024, involving at least four vehicles, including a box truck and a white Tesla. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash was reported.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers and other emergency personnel worked diligently to manage the scene, but the severity of the crash necessitated a hard closure of multiple lanes. By 6:17 AM, a SigAlert was issued, blocking all northbound lanes south of 16th Avenue. Efforts to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the accident continued through the morning, with only the left lane reopened by 7:09 AM.
